At United Abilities all new participants are asked to give verbal and written consent to the collection of personal information. United Abilities only collects personal information directly from the participant or their authorised representative. United Abilities only collects personal information for purposes that are directly related to the services and activities of United Abilities. Each participant is treated like an individual and his or her personal dignity is regarded as paramount.
On entry into United Abilities privacy levels are discussed and arranged with the participant. Each review of the participants support plan addresses privacy and adjusts levels if necessary. United Abilities’ participants are in direct control of their outcomes and dictate the level of privacy they require. Participants complete a checklist when they commence with United Abilities. A senior staff member ensures the participant is aware of their right to confidentiality and United Abilities confidentiality policies prior to the participant signing the document.
United Abilities has consistent policies and procedures in place that give clear guidelines on the gathering of personal information. On entry into United Abilities all new participants are given a Participant handbook, which includes what information United Abilities gathers and why it is gathered and stored. This information is provided in a way that the participant is able to understand.

All staff inductions include training in the gathering of participant information, what information can be gathered and how to inform the participants of what information has been gathered. Only staff members directly engaging with a participant are given access to participant’s files. Files are stored securely at all times and are only accessible to the Director. When working in a participant’s home staff is required to respect the privacy of all participants and are forbidden to read or interfere with a participants personal documents.
